Two years ago, I finished with chemo and surgeries, but my cancer journey was far from over. Anxiety, fear, bitterness, sadness, anger – these are my daily battles now. I look in the mirror and see a different person, both physically and mentally. I healed my body, but now I need to heal my heart and soul.
I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in August 2013 at the age of 34, when my two children were 3 and 5 years old – three months after finding out I was BRCA1 positive. My mother also had breast cancer in her 30's, and her mother died of ovarian cancer in her early 40's, and now I had inherited the genetic mutation for breast and ovarian cancer as well. I underwent chemotherapy and a total of four surgeries during my treatment.
Now, I have the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Peru and volunteer with other cancer survivors with A Fresh Chapter. I want to move on to a new chapter in my life - move away from the "cancer chapter" and the post-cancer fear, anxiety, and sadness that still bogs me down. By helping others and creating cross-cultural bonds through our shared experiences of facing hardship, volunteering with A Fresh Chapter will give me the tools to help me move on from my illness in a meaningful way. I will also get the opportunity to fulfill my ultimate travel dream – visiting the ancient wonder of Machu Picchu.
Whether spending time to support families impacted by cancer at a home like Ronald McDonald House, volunteering with mentally or physically challenged people at Mother Teresa’s Home For the Dying & The Destitute, or providing an extra set of hands to serve meals at daycares, retirement facilities and special needs schools, I will not only act as a volunteer, but also as a Cancer Ambassador in communities where cancer is often veiled in shame, secrecy, and stigma. We will also be working with a local cancer support organization called Amate to create a dialogue about cancer beyond borders.
I am raising money to cover my Program Fee, which covers the costs associated with the two-week volunteer trip to Peru as well as a 20-week program designed to help me heal the emotional scars of cancer and give me the tools to step into a meaningful fresh chapter. All additional funds raised will help subsidize the program costs for someone financially devastated by cancer to participate in A Fresh Chapter program.
A Fresh Chapter (Alliance Foundation) is a Project in affiliation with Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE) a non profit public charity exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
