Being diagnosed with my first cancer at 26 as a new wife and mother was far from easy. I had no idea what Lymphoma was but knew I had to somehow beat it. Looking back now I feel I focused more on getting myself better and putting my cancer journey behind me rather than accepting and dealing with all the emotions and pain that had just been thrown at me. When I was diagnosed for the second time at 30, it opened the door to those emotions and inner wounds that I had not properly dealt with. Yet again I felt i just needed to get through treatment. It wasn’t until I reached remission that I was able to really breathe and try and accept all that had happened. I have found that surrounding myself with other survivors has helped me tremendously by simply knowing that someone can relate to all these indescribable ranges of emotions.
Several months ago I came across an organization called A Fresh Chapter. It caught my interest as it is an organization that offers cancer survivors an opportunity for meaningful travel, volunteering, and personal healing. I was really intrigued by the volunteering aspect as I have always had a desire to help others. I have even tweaked my career goal after my most recent cancer battle to pursue a career as a medical social worker since I feel that is now an area where I can really relate and connect with others; personally and professionally.
Yet as the months went on and with the recent news of my original misdiagnosis, I realized how much more I need to focus on helping and healing myself. A Fresh Chapter is offering me the opportunity to travel to Peru in October where I can disconnect from all of my surroundings and truly heal. While in Peru, I will be working on myself and volunteering with a community based project in an underserved area of Lima. This could include supporting families facing cancer or volunteering with an organization like Mother Teresa's to care for mentally or physically challenged people. In addition to giving back in Peru, I have also committed to a pay-it-forward plan here at home where I will be volunteering with pediatric cancer patients at my local hospital.
This opportunity could not have come at a better time and I am super excited and ready to move on to a FRESH CHAPTER IN MY LIFE. I'm eager to connect with new people, explore a new country, and once again enjoy life, especially after cancer. Any and all donations, prayers, love, and support are greatly appreciated.
