This has been a life-changing year. I’ve spent the last twelve months fighting stage 3a breast cancer. It’s been quite an unexpected challenge but I’m closing in on the end of the intensive rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries (seven to date!) and I’m ready to think about what it means to be a survivor instead of a patient. What does it mean? I've been surrounded by love and support that takes my breath away. Without it, I'm not sure how I could have made it through. I've grown in so many ways and learned how much my friends, family and faith mean to me. Now I feel compelled to turn my experience with this terrible diagnosis into something positive and take that feeling of love and support that I have been so blessed with and spread it to others who aren't as fortunate.
After just starting to investigate how I might do that, I stumbled upon an opportunity. Since there were many candidates and few spots, I felt it was a long shot but I figured I had to try. But after filling out multiple forms and taking part in numerous interviews, I have been selected to join an organization called A Fresh Chapter on a trip to Peru! While there, I will be volunteering in the local community for two weeks. Besides the amazing experiences I will have giving back at places such as Mother Teresa’s Home For the Dying and The Destitute and serving food to special needs children and the elderly, I will serve as a Cancer Ambassador in communities where cancer is often veiled in shame, secrecy, and stigma. Along with those I will be serving, I'll be meeting and working with other A Fresh Chapter volunteers whose lives have been impacted by cancer. I'm excited to become part of a community of fighters and survivors who can relate to what I've been through. I know I can learn from them and I am hoping I have insights that will lend to their journeys as well. This opportunity to participate in activities with A Fresh Chapter volunteers and support staff will help me continue to heal and grow from my own cancer experience while giving me an avenue to share my blessings of love and support with others.
I want to make this next year life-changing as well. But this year, I’m ready to do it on my terms! I ask that you might consider donating to my fundraising campaign. I have set my goal high with the intention of aiding someone else in taking the journey toward healing as well. By helping me to raise this money, not only will you be enabling me to go on this incredible adventure, but you can help subsidize someone else who has been affected by cancer but who is less financially capable. They can have the experience of a lifetime as well. Any amount would be helpful! Your donation is tax deductible. Thank you for considering helping me with my own fresh chapter!
