Hello, my name is Kakari Omane Boateng and I am currently a junior at Sacramento Charter High School. I attended the camp last year on a scholarship from the Sacramento Vegetarian Society, a organization that promotes vegan food, and animal rights. YEA Camp was a wonderful experience, and I was welcomed to come again so I could re-cap on some of the skills that I had lost from the camp, and also help aid some of the new students. YEA Camp has inspired me to become an arts, social, & environmental activist, at first I was unsure of what I wanted to do, until I was asked, what are you passinonate about, and from that point , things were pretty simple. After I left, I was able to apply a lot of the things I learned to issues or occurences that happened around me. For instance, this school year the school board has changed the dress code in a way that would negatively effect families financially. A lot of people were upset so in response, I looked back to the red notebook of my notes from YEA Camp to see how I could help change things. Influenced by my notes and what I have learned from the camp, I created a petiton. As a positive result, I now have over 700 supporters as wel as the bonus of having it gain recognition from the school board. Soon, I will be having a meeting with the superintendent ( who is extremely nice)in order to negotiate the dress code.Without YEA Camp, this oppurtunity, would not have been possible. So, in order for me to learn more skills so I can improve more in my activism, it would be well-appreciated if you could fund my return.
