BENEFITING: LA-MAS INC
EVENT DATE: Jul 13, 2014
World Cup LA is a community-based public viewing festival throughout Los Angeles featuring live broadcasts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. More than a sports-related event, the purpose of World Cup LA is to celebrate the diverse and vibrant people and places that make up our city.
A sprawling metropolis shaped in years past by private over public interests, Los Angeles has endured tremendous challenges with a promising resilience. Despite a history of segregation reinforced by a physical environment that more often divides than unites us, our city has emerged as one that is not only concerned with individuality and independence but also values connection and community. The popularity of CicLAvia, revitalization of the L.A. River and grassroots activation of countless streets, parks and abandoned lots all demonstrate our eagerness to step out of our cars and homes, meet our neighbors and reclaim our public spaces.
A truly global city, the World Cup has long ignited the passions of Angelenos just as it has of those all around the world. Many of us have made the choice to forego watching matches in the comfort of our homes and instead share the experience with our fellow Angelenos. At the end of the day, we have found ourselves not only cheering for our respective teams but also celebrating our city and each other.
For this year’s World Cup, we are planning a series of pop-up public viewing events as well as encouraging other to do the same! Inspired by a scene repeated all over the world, TVs will be placed facing sidewalks and other public spaces for people to gather around and share this experience with their neighbors.
While many festivals of this type are one-offs with no lasting impact, the events of World Cup LA are being planned in partnership with local community organizations and are being designed to contribute to their ongoing efforts to strengthen the low-income neighborhoods they work in throughout the city.
With your support, World Cup LA will take advantage of the world’s most popular sporting event to bring people together and build on the progress we are making to transform LA into a more inclusive, livable and healthy city.
