THE STORY:

About Dr. Russell Moon

A couple years ago, Dr. Russell Moon was an avid bicyclist, had a booming dental practice, was teaching at UCLA and getting ready for the coming ski season. Then on Sept. 13, 2011, he was on a bike ride when a car accidentally turned into him, fracturing his C3 and C4 vertebrae and paralyzing him from the shoulders down. Russell spent six months in a Chatsworth transitional facility and then moved back to Santa Monica and found NextStep.

Russell's work ethic and attitude are an example to all NextStep clients. Since starting his program at NextStep, Russell has made tremendous strides in his recovery. He has regained the ability to stand on his own and has returned to work and is once again seeing dental patients. While his hard work pays off, a great deal of his recovery can be attributed to the state of the art equipment he has access to at NextStep such as FES.

How FES helps Russell and our clients

FES, short for Functional Electrical Stimulation, stimulates a person's nerves and muscles, producing strong muscle contractions. The FES bike contracts the muscles in a sequence to create purposeful movements, such as pedaling a bike. FES plays an integral part in the NextStep program as it builds muscle, improves bone strength, increases blood circulation and cardiovascular health, and improves overall health. It is a perfect complement to all our services.

Why we need to upgrade our FES bikes

Unfortunately, it has been over five years since we purchased our FES bikes and, as most technologies do, they have become outdated.  Our current FES bikes do not function properly and new FES technologies have been developed over the past five years which could drastically improve the health and recovery of our clients. It costs $15,000 to upgrade one FES bike. Upgrading just one bike would make a great difference in the lives of our clients. We would be truly grateful for your support.
