College student Emily Bowman was visiting friends in Athens, Georgia on February 16, 2013 when a senseless, preventable crash upended her life. Struck from behind as a pedestrian by a pickup truck, she was left on the pavement as the driver sped away. Emily was not able to speak or move and underwent brain surgery as the first step on her long, courageous journey to recovery. That path included intensive therapy, and after 14 months, she spoke her first words! Through determination and hard work, Emily is now able to walk and spends her time sharing her story at MADD Georgia Victim Impact Panels, schools and other groups. Her inspirational outlook and words of caution against the dangers of drunk driving have reached thousands in Georgia. We salute Emily as our 2018 Highlighted Victim and thank her and her family for sharing her story of hope.

About Walk Like MADD
Walk Like MADD is MADD's signature fundraising event to help us raise both awareness and funds to eliminate drunk driving. Last year, tens of thousands of people in over 80 cities across the nation participated, and together, we raised more than 3 million dollars to provide our programs and services at no cost. With every step taken and each dollar raised, walkers are supporting MADD’s lifesaving mission to keep our families and communities safe.
