My goal: $26,500, a thousand for every mile
On Monday, April 21, 2014, I’ll run the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon for Wake Up Narcolepsy (WUN) and for the millions worldwide living with narcolepsy, including my16-year-old son. Yes, I am running again. Unfortunately last year I was stopped less than half a mile from the finish line because of the tragic bombings. I really want to finish the marathon showing my son that anything is possible.
Six years ago this spring, he was diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy, a sleep/wake neurological disorder. He has the classic case of narcolepsy: his symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. I have three children, who I love dearly and would do anything for. So committing to run the Boston Marathon for WUN is something I want to do, something I’m compelled to do.
Training and running the Marathon will push me beyond any sort of comfort zone I have, but if this gesture can help improve my son’s life and the lives of others with narcolepsy, then I’m excited for the challenge. I watch my son struggle with narcolepsy and realize no matter how challenging a single marathon will be, it’s nothing compared with the challenges he faces each and every day. Like every other part of his life, he is facing this devastating condition with grace and maturity, an outlook that I consider heroic.
The funds I raise through my Boston Marathon efforts will be donated to support narcolepsy research. I’ve set a personal fundraising goal of $26,200, a thousand for every mile of the marathon.
I hope you all will support me on my last marathon. Thank you for your support and interest!
