FOREVER FRIENDS GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE OF VENTURA COUNTY's Fundraiser:

Training and Behavior Modification Fun Fund

THE STORY:

Did you know that our second highest expenditure is dog training? Yes all of our dogs are perfect in their own way, but many of them need a little polishing to become adoptable. We provide training to certain dogs that exhibit behaviors that may cause them to be returned to us. In order to have the highest success rate in placing our dogs in suitable families, we feel some dogs absolutely need training or behavior modification before they can be adopted. We are lucky to have excellent trainers to work with, but there is still a fee for their services. Currently we have 4 dogs in training programs. The most recent is a sweet girl – Bella who came to us after having been “beat up” numerous times by a new dog in her home. Thankfully the owner recognized Bella needed help. She is currently being evaluated to make sure she did not develop any aggression as a result of these incidents. Our other newest boy in a training program is Clifford. Clifford has shown signs of resource guarding. He is a sweet boy, but he needs to be evaluated and these behaviors need to be addressed through training. Finally we have 2 longer term training residents. 2 year old Moose – a real handful, who has a hard time settling down. Moose will need a patient owner! And last but not least, Madison, our seven year old dog, has been trying to learn some new coping skills for quite a few months. Madison reacts poorly to other dogs and is trying really hard to learn how to not be so reactive when she sees them.
The good news is that we have a recent graduate of our training program that has been adopted. Chloe, went home last weekend to the perfect family. She successfully mastered her issues and was able to be placed in a home.
We would do just about anything medically necessary for any of our dogs, so it stands to reason, that we will also address their behavior issues. At minimum a dog with these types of issues will need 2 months of training, which will cost us about $800. And we can have upwards of 10 dogs a year that need these services. Needless to say we felt it was time to start a special fund for these dogs – they are just as deserving as the ones that are sick!

I found my forever home Sep 2010. Trainer Shannon helped me before, and even after I came to my new family...I had some issues and Shannon helped my new family understand a little more about me and what they could do to make the transition easier. My new family was very grateful! 6 years ago
