BENEFITING: Hide in Plain Sight
From Tragedy To Hope
Two days after Christmas 2011, Zoe Royer’s family met up in a McDonald’s parking lot to discuss some ongoing family issues. Since her parents’ divorce, her father stopped taking his medication and began drinking heavily. Zoe and her younger sister went into the McDonald's and as her mother approached her father, he removed a gun from his jacket, shooting Zoe’s mother three times before fleeing and shooting himself.
Both of Zoe’s parents died. She and her sister were left alone, homeless, unable to watch television for a month for fear of seeing themselves and their former family on the news. She dropped out of high school and moved to a new state to avoid the bullying that accompanied her unsolicited celebrity status.
After being homeless and spending the last 3 years between 11 addresses, Zoe, has taken up a new battle— not only to get her life together, but to inspire other teens whose lives have been devastated by tragedy, homelessness, depression and bullying to look beyond their pain and find strength to move forward with their lives.
Hide in Plain Sight is raising money to send Zoe to college, and using this campaign to show the countless teens unable to provide themselves with necessities like regular meals and a safe place to sleep that they are not alone. We are calling on teens around the world who have found themselves without somewhere to call home to share their story.
Use #DearYou to shed light on the hardships teens face every day, and tell us how you’re fighting to overcome it. Hide in Plain Sight will choose a story to share each week, and once we have met our goal for Zoe, we’ll continue to provide scholarships for other high school seniors who are homeless, facing unfathomable odds and working hard to overcome them. Our mission is to show homeless teens that they have the strength to make it through, and help as many of them along as we can.
Zoe Royer has come this far and with your help, she can take the next step in putting the pieces of her life back together. Thank you so much for your contribution, and please take a moment to share this page with everyone you know so that we can make a difference in this young woman’s life and start taking the steps to find our next deserving young person to help.
