The words " You have cancer" are a game changer. In May 2013 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a shocking revelation for myself and family. I had no signs of cancer. So how could this be happening to me? Well, truth be told, I had neglected to have an annual mammogram for three years. My mother had been diagonosed with breast cancer in February 2013 and its noteworthy to add, my maternal grandmother had a mastemomy some 20 years prior. So the fact that I hadn't had a screening in three years was just plain stupidity.
My biopsies showed a 2 centimeter malignant tumor on my right breast and abnormal yet benign cells on my left. Through additional MRI screening a second 1.5 centimeter mass was found hidden behind the initial finding.
In August I had a lumpectomy on my right breast, followed by 35 days of radiation treatment. My final treatment was November 7th.
Throughout my treatment I ran to keep myself sane. Running was my way of fighting the disease and not giving in. In February 2014 I had a 6 month follow up mammogram. I am happy to report I am cancer free! I finally have my life back, for now. The fear of recurrence haunts me on a daily basis, coupled with the knowledge that this disease is a genetic marker in my family's DNA.
With all the billions of dollars spent in cancer research, no one knows what causes cancer. But through this research Doctors are able to cure woman like me and give me another chance to run.
This March 16th I am running the NYC Half Marathon for “Think Pink Rocks,” which is a charity for the fight against breast cancer. Any amount you wish to donate to this cause would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your generous support.
