BENEFITING: Sarcoma Foundation of America
ORGANIZER: Sarcoma Foundation of America
EVENT DATE: Jun 16, 2013
The Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is an official charity partner of the Wipro San Francisco Marathon. Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1% of all adult cancers), but rather prevalent in children (about 15% of all childhood cancers).
Marissa Friedman, my girlfriend and a sarcoma survivor, and I will be running the San Francisco Marathon. SFA is partnering with this event to raise awareness and funds to support sarcoma research. In May 2012 at 27 years old, Marissa was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcoma is found in only 800 people annually. Already a runner, she was registered for the 2012 San Francisco Marathon but instead of spending the summer training, she was receiving chemotherapy treatment.
Twenty years ago she would have lost her left leg to synovial sarcoma. Thanks to the evolution of sarcoma research and supporters like yourself, she is a sarcoma survivor and marathon runner. The cure for sarcoma, however, will only come with more funds supporting increased research around the country – and raising the funds to directly support SFA’s vital research is what running this race is all about. It is also about honoring all of those who have lost their battle with sarcoma or are currently fighting.
Join our team to help raise funds for sarcoma research. To join, select “Create Your Fundraiser” or “Join the Team” to set up your own team page.
