EVENT DATE: May 26, 2013
This year marks the 5th Vermont City Marathon I will be running, and it is particularly noteworthy because:
1) I am returning to med school from a research fellowship the same way I started it, with a marathon (old pic of me sitting down is from my first one)
2) I turn 30 two days post-marathon (yikes), but importantly,
3) I will once again be raising money to help a cause supporting individuals with cancer.
This year the charity supported by the med student team is Steps to Wellness. This is a program at the Vermont Cancer Center (at my med school!) which works with individuals going through cancer treatment to help them maintain function during their initial therapy, and provides a pathway toward improved fitness and quality of life after. As part of a research endeavor as well, the program includes a physical therapy evaluation, medical assessment, individualized exercise prescription, and education for patients involved. Additionally, the program collects a number of physiological and psychological measures to evaluate and improve the program. The overall goal is to enhance our understanding of the potential benefits of rehabilitation for cancer survivors. Given my interest in physical activity, fitness, and cancer research, I couldn't think of a better cause to be supporting this year. (And I will definitely be a driving force encouraging patients to be physically active during my career as a oncologist!)
I hope you find it in you to support this great cause as much as you can. I got the ball rolling on my fundraising a bit late, but doesn't the push always come in the last few days? =) Click the big DONATE button.
Thank you in advance for your support, and wish me luck on race day!
