EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
Growing up, I played soccer and, later, began running marathons and competing in triathlons. At the same time, my cousin, Anthony, was giving his all to push through the challenges of spina bifida. Also, my aunt and uncle (Anthony's parents) have been involved in local and national spina bifida causes, plus my parents and grandparents have volunteered over the years.
Having watched an athlete with spina bifida, Tatayna McFadden, win the Boston, Chicago, London and New York Marathons in 2013, plus the Boston and London Marathons in 2014, I saw an opportunity to connect my lifelong involvement in sports, my family's involvement with spina bifida, and the opportunity to help disabled athletes compete. Thus, I am running the New York Marathon to help support Team USA Paralympics, which includes five athletes with spina bifida plus many others who face equally challenging disabilities but still manage to put together amazing performances while representing our country!
In addition to the opportunity to support Team USA Paralympics, the New York Marathon is also important to me as one of my best friends, Justin Silver, will be running his first marathon. Six years ago I promised him that when he was ready, we'd run his first marathon together. After losing forty pounds, we ran his first half marathon together; he's since run ten half marathons, and being able to "coach" him through these has been rewarding. Looking ahead, I am excited to be helping him train so that we can run the marathon.
Putting this all together, I am thrilled to be running the New York Marathon in recognition of my cousin and our family, with Justin, and for Team USA Paralympics!
