BENEFITING: JOHN RITTER FOUNDATION FOR AORTIC HEALTH
ORGANIZER: JOHN RITTER FOUNDATION FOR AORTIC HEALTH
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
February 5, 2013 will forever be embedded into my memory. That day I lost my best friend, my soul mate, my husband that I had so many dreams to share with and had hoped to grow old with. What started out as a normal day, ended up in tragedy. Bruce was self-employed and one part of his business was snow removal and lawn care services. There had been a light snow fall and Bruce had left around 6 a.m. that day to tend to the driveways of his customers. A little over 2 hours later, his truck pulled into the driveway and I thought to myself, "oh good I get to see Bruce before I leave for work" ... instead it was our son, Scott telling me to get to the hospital as the ambulance had taken Dad and he wasn't sure what happened. The next several hours were spent racing from our small town hospital in western Wisconsin to another hospital an hour away in Minnesota. I was in a fog and did not know for sure what was happening. He wasn't breathing on his own, his blood pressure was dropping, they were having trouble inserting an IV and thoughts were racing through my head of what was happening. At that moment all I wanted was for God to answer one prayer for me ... and that was not to take Bruce from us. My prayers went unanswered. For the next few weeks we all thought Bruce had passed away from a heart attack. It was not until I opened the autopsy report that I read the words aortic dissection. And it wasn't until I was talking to my co-worker that she reminded me that this was what her father had suffered a few years earlier and had survived! Our family started researching the causes for aortic dissection.
Our daughter, Micaela sent me a link to the John Ritter Foundation website and that is when I sat up half the night reading all the information and literature on the site. A few weeks later she sent another link with a note "I saw this on Facebook and thought you might be interested! The John Ritter Foundation was selected to be a charity partner of the 2013 NYC Marathon. .... I would be there to support you!" After much thought and prayer I completed the process and was thrilled to be selected as a runner on Team Ritter! It all made perfect sense. For the last several years Micaela and I have been long distance running partners. We would support each other through training and meet for runs at various locations. As a former runner himself, Bruce would provide much needed support and was our #1 cheerleader! I am humbled to have been chosen to participate in such an amazing event on Team Ritter.
I will be running 26.2 miles in memory of my husband of 27 years and my BFF, Bruce. The funds I raise will go to the John Ritter Foundation for research of aortic health and to help raise awareness. I truly believe that knowledge is power and if I can help spread the word about aortic health and get people talking, help raise funds for research and education then perhaps other families will be spared from losing a loved one in the same way we lost Bruce. I hope you will consider helping me in this effort and sponsor me in support of the John Ritter Foundation. And, on November 3, please keep me and the other Team Ritter runners in your thoughts and prayers as we run for a collective reason!
Thank you for your support!
