BENEFITING: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
Dear Family and Friends,
At the end of January, I learned that my best friend, Adam Brock, was diagnosed with a type of cancer called Burkitt’s lymphoma. Months later, I still can’t imagine what it’s like for a 24-year-old to go through repeated cycles of chemotherapy. What I can envision is a plan to take action.
In November, I’ll be running in the New York City Marathon — my first — to support cancer research that can help Adam and countless other cancer patients. While I currently support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, my reason for participating extends beyond one cause. At the Foundation, I’ve come to recognize that finding one cure for cancer could one day cure all types.
That mission is already being pioneered in one of our premier efforts, the Evelyn H. Lauder Founder’s Fund Project. Through scientific research, the initiative explores why some cancers spread more quickly than others and are responsive to certain therapies. No topic in cancer medicine is more pressing — a realization that especially hit home after Adam’s diagnosis. Now, I feel more passionate than ever about my line of work.
Since February, Adam has chronicled his fight against cancer in an emotional blog titled “Brock Will Beat It.” His writings narrate the difficulty and distress of his experience, but they also reveal a spirit and strength far more powerful. In each post, Adam signs off with the same phrase, “Clear Eyes. Full Heart. Can’t Lose.”
Although Adam is doing great and is now in remission it seems especially fitting to run on his behalf: We first met on our eighth grade track team and both joined cross country in high school. Running drew us together; now, I'm hoping the marathon can unite my family and friends, this time for a cause equally as meaningful as our friendship.
If you are able to and would like to, please consider donating to my marathon fund, which will aid The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s efforts to cure all types of cancer. Every dollar counts, and I'd appreciate any donation amount, no matter how small.
In a recent blog post, Adam compared his life to a marathon, writing, ”I think it's important to set the right pace so I can finish the race strong.” With your support, I know he and others coping with cancer will take the lead.
Clear eyes. Full Heart. Can’t Lose.
