This Year We Walk In Memory Of Our friend, Mark Takai. A leader, a national servant and a friend.
July 25, 2016
BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation
EVENT: New York City 2016
EVENT DATE: Sep 25, 2016
Mark Takai spent his entire life in the service of others. he spent 17 years in the Hawaii National Guard, that included a deployment in Quwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was responsible for important legislation in the State House in Hawaii, where hs spent 20 years. Then on to D.C. to represent the Hawaii 1st Congressional District. This is where we met.
He was an instant ally of the sick and dying World Trade Center first responders as we worked to get our health bill passed. When others on the hill asked how much our bill would cost, he asked how can I help? We became friends through the process.
He and his wife, Sami were supposed to visit New York for a show. Mark and I were going to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. I would give him a personal tour through the eyes of a first responder. That would never happen. He called me and told me of his cancer. Though through his eyes it gave him a better understanding of what the WTC first responders with cancer were going through.
Mark passed away without being able to make that trip. In honor of his tireless efforts on not only our behalf, but that of veterans, our service members and so many others we walk in his honor. He will make it to the memorial in spirit with us.
Won't you please donate what you can in Mark's name and help us to help others? Mark wouldn't have it any other way.
About the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. Building for America’s Bravest, a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. In January 2015, the Foundation also raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for the families of slain NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Luis Ramos.
The mission of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. We also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
