EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
A PH Patient's heart often beats at a marathoner's pace... and that's why we are working hard to race for a cure for Pulmonary Hypertension.
And you may be wondering what exactly that is too, right? Well, it's is a disease of high pressures in the arteries in the lungs that makes people short of breath, lightheaded, and can make doing the simplest tasks like walking upstairs, playing outside, going for a hike, or carrying groceries into the house exhausting tasks.
Although there are several medical treatments available, there is still no cure, and sometimes people even need to get a lung transplant. We are racing to help change all that by raising awareness about the disease and funds to find a cure.
Now for the even cooler part---- "Let me be your lungs"
By registering with Team PHenomenal Hope, we are literally racing with members of the PH community. Our team is partnering our athletes with community members so that we are literally racing not only for our own goals and personal race time, but for our friends in the community.
This journey is about much more than the 13.1 or 26.2 miles - it's about new community and new friends. #LetMeBeYourLungs
About two years ago I was asked to participate in a 10k event. At that point I had only ever done 5k "fun runs" where I didn't really run and never trained! At the time I felt like I needed to do something more with my life and decided to challenge myself by training and finishing the 10k. When I crossed the finish line of that race I knew I just found a new passion! Fast Forward to now: I have trained and completed several 5k’s, 10k’s and one half-marathon! I have found such a passion in running that I never thought possible. If you would have told me I would be training to complete my first FULL MARATHON 2 years ago I would have called you CRAZY!!! During all of the training, sweat, and thoughts of being crazy, my amazing husband, a few close friends and my family have supported me. Throughout my training I have turned to Mandy Gabarda for any and all questions I have had about this crazy adventure! She has invited me to participate in the 2016 Pittsburgh Marathon and race for Pulmonary Hypertension, which I accepted with open arms! There are so many people fighting different battels every day, and running with Team PHenomenal Hope is giving me the opportunity to BE SOMEONES LUNGS, someone who would give anything to be able to run, but do to Pulmonary Hypertension are unable to. Please help support my journey to 26.2 by helping support PH!
