BENEFITING: Special Olympics Massachusetts
ORGANIZER: Special Olympics Massachusetts
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
Why did I decide to run the Boston Marathon again …..?
Special Olympic Athletes push themselves every day and even more so when they compete – when they step on the field, the court, in the pool or on the slopes – they have to overcome so many physical, emotional and mental challenges …. I decided I would push myself to the limits in their honor.
I have been involved with Special Olympics since May of 1998, when we learned that our son James had Down Syndrome. At that time we had no idea what was in store for us, for Jimmy or for our family. We had no idea how lucky we would be to have Jimmy in our life, to watch him grow (and grow he did – now at 18 years old he is 5’ 10” and 190 pounds!) We also had no idea how our lives would be forever changed by our involvement in Special Olympics.
We have experienced the joy of an athlete making her first basket – and witnessed the tears on the parents faces as they watch with pride and amazement …. We’ve been encouraged by the cheering of the fans on a cold fall day at The Governor’s Academy – as students and faculty cheer on the Special Olympic soccer teams – brings a smile to my face and tear to my eye … and the joy goes on …
So it is with that in mind that I crazily endeavor to run the Boston Marathon again this year … if the Special Olympic athletes can do it I can at least give it my best!
I hope you will consider supporting me as I run the Boston Marathon to benefit Special Olympics!
Thank you very much!
