My great friend, colleague, and Signature Alum EDWARD NORTON has been amazing in his advocacy on behalf of our writers and the new Signature Center and has come up with an astounding and humbling idea.
As you all know, I feel very strongly that the Signature Center has been made possible by the over 1,200 alums who have participated over the years in making each season come to life. Not only have each of them, like Edward, put their passion and heart into supporting our writers but they have done so with a generosity that is overwhelming and inspiring. I have been amazed by the loyalty and support that our alums have expressed throughout the years. One of my favorite things: for about five years now we have put aside a night of each production to honor and thank our alumni with a performance just for them. It is a night where we come together to celebrate the theatre and to thank everyone who has made Signature Theatre Company possible.
Now, after 20 years, we are about to move into the largest new theater complex built in NY in decades…three theaters designed by the remarkable Frank Gehry on West 42nd Street…a truly amazing, once-every-few-generations event in the cultural life of this city. It’s a project that cost nearly $75 million to build and the last few million still has to be raised before the Opening but come rain or shine on January 31,2012 we will open the doors to our permanent home, Signature Center! Check out the cool video to the left.
So, here’s Edward’s idea:
“What if we give each of our alums the tools to try to help out, to dive in and make this last home stretch possible? If each of the 1,200 Signature Alums could commit to raising $2000 to help build this new theater and we all hit the goal, that would be $2.4 million dollars and show the power that we as artists can have in support of this dream.”
Then he added, “We are determined that we’re not going to just hold our breaths hoping it gets done. We’re not going to just sit around waiting on people to write big checks. We’re going to step up and raise a lot of money before the holidays.”
So, I’m pitching in, and here’s what I’m asking you for:
I’m asking 20 of my closest friends and family to step up and help me reach the goal.
Will you donate $100 to support my effort or anything you can afford?
That’s all. You can do it right here. Easy. I am joining this effort and am asking if you will help me reach this goal! I’ve started with a donation of $100 and invite you to do the same, or whatever you can do, to help Edward and all of us get there. Thanks for all of your support and well wishes.
Here’s to opening the new Signature Center!
Thanks SO much.
