BENEFITING: The Sierra Club Foundation
THE STORY:
Sierra Club Military Outdoors, since 2006, has got over 50,000+ service members, veterans, and their families outdoors to ensure they can experience the healing powers of the lands they helped to defend and protect in service. Our first military outing though was when John Muir took President and Veteran Theodore Roosevelt out to what would become Yosemite National Park in the early part of the 20th Century.
The transition home, for veteran, service member, or their families can be incredibly difficult even without mental and physical challenges brought on by war, and time outdoors helps to ease that transition and foster improved mental, phsyical, and social health.
At Military Outdoors however, run by veterans for veterans, service members, and their families, we don't just take someone out once, but work to build the skills to make the outdoors a lifelong experience and provide opportunities for leadership development to leverage the skills our service members and their families have in the community.
As the fiscal sponsor of the Sierra Club Military Outdoors and other charitable programs of the Sierra Club, The Sierra Club Foundation provides resources to it and other nonprofit organizations to support charitable scientific, educational, literary, organizing, advocacy, and legal programs that further our mission.
See you on the trail!
