THE SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN - BOSTON wrote -
Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Boston is proud to have been selected by the 2014 John Hancock Non Profit Partners Program as a partner organization for the 118th Boston Marathon. Our team will be running for our pediatric patients who like many marathon participants come to Boston from all over the world. Most of these children come to the hospital after sustaining a traumatic burn injury. At the Boston Shriners Hospital, a team of specialists provides lifesaving reconstructive burn care and rehabilitative services that go the distance in helping children and protecting childhood….we call it Love to the rescue.
Team Love to the rescue® will be running the marathon for 7 year old Madelyn from Connecticut who, at the age of 3, fell off her tricycle into a fire pit that had been extinguished, but was still devastatingly hot. They will run for 16 year old Giovanni from Haiti who received an electrical burn from a fallen live wire at the age of 11 while playing outdoors. Madelyn and Giovanni, like so many other Shriners patients, were simply going about their everyday lives when they sustained their burn injuries. In a matter of moments their carefree childhood years were abruptly halted. Their stories are heartbreaking, yet their resilience to triumph over tragedy is inspirational.
Team Love to the rescue® runners will pair up with a patient who will follow their training and cheer for them on race day, April 21, 2014. Please make a personal connection and support Madelyn, Giovanni and countless other children who have benefited from the expertise and advanced burn care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston regardless of their families’ ability to pay.
