Scholars in the Big Apple
Organized by: Lane Clegg
Event Name: CrowdRise Halloween Challenge
The scholars at Tulsa Lighthouse Charter School are hard working, driven, compassionate, and kind. At TLCS, we are truly a team and family. Our scholars desire to learn and know more about the world around them daily. They come to school hungry for knowledge. Many of them, however, have never been outside of Oklahoma or a few surrounding states. Many of them lack the means to travel and to explore our country. They learn of other cities through lessons and books, but so few get to have the hands on experience of traveling to a new place and soaking it all in.
Our school serves a diverse population of kids in an area where much is dilapidated. Ninety-five percent of our babies receive a free and reduced lunch. We aim to prepare our scholars for success to and through college through offering an exiting and rigorous arts-infused program. But our scholars will still graduate without seeing much of the world that their peers will get to see and experience. We desperately want to be able to arm our scholars with the knowledge and experience they'll need to be competitive as we, in no way, believe that our babies' zip codes should determine their trajectory.
In order to make this trip a reality, our 6th graders are responsible for raising 100% of the funds. They're working hard to come up with ideas and to execute those ideas in hopes that, this summer, they'll experience some of the rich history and culture that New York City has to offer. This trip would allow them to see some of New York's finest sites, to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, to see a Broadway show, and to tour one of our country's most prestigious universities.
They'll be working on raising money over the course of the next couple of years. This is a big trip and requires big planning! Help make this trip a reality for our scholars! Anything you can contribute would be so appreciated!
