BENEFITING: No Kid Hungry
EVENT DATE: May 31, 2014
On May 31st six intrepid sailors will leave the cozy confines of San Francisco Bay on the vessel Briseis, past the Golden Gate Bridge to finish a single day Farallon Islands rounding. We wanted to have fun and have meaning to our trip so we are going to raise money to help relieve childhood hunger in the US and we’re looking for your donations.
The crew includes:
Frank Barbieri – Captain
Todd Cummings – First Mate
Brian Fritz – Captain of the Foredeck
Stevana Chase – Chief Helmsperson
Jacob Mullins – Crew
Ryan Graves – Crew
This is a technically difficult sail, but completely safe if treated with preparation and respect. We will be arriving in Sausalito, Friday May 30th for a shake out sail and man overboard drills, after which we’ll have a big dinner and early bedtime. We will ring a 6am bell Saturday the 31st for our early morning departure on the ebb tides out of the Golden Gate. Should prevailing winds hold we anticipate hugging the Y142 marker at the SW corner of the infamous Potato Patch Shoal and head West at about 240 Degrees to the island cluster. We will round counter clockwise and, depending on conditions, shoot between Middle Farallon and SE Farallon or head further north to the cut between North Farallon and Middle Farallon. We expect to give the lee shore a very wide berth, as this is not a race. The rounding will cover a total of about 60 nautical miles and could take anywhere from 10 – 16 hours depending on wind and conditions. We expect to be back in Sausalito Saturday night. Probably no later than 11pm. It will be a long and tiring day that we will celebrate with our families and anyone else who would like to join, Saturday night May 31st in Sausalito.
Our charity of choice is the No Kid Hungry campaign, which is seeking to end childhood hunger in America. We’ve each been moved by the crisis of child hunger in the United States. I have participated and volunteered for No Kid Hungry and the parent organization Share our Strength for over six years I know they have a plan to fix the problem. Your donation will help them execute on that plan.
