BENEFITING: Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue
ORGANIZER: Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue
EVENT: Saving Pets Challenge 2016
If we raise the most funds by August 4, we will win $50,000 for climbing vet bills! Every bit counts!
Many of you know that Tana and Keenan found us via Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue which does amazing work rescuing the old, the sick, the abandoned....from SoCal shelters, from Craigslist, from owner relinquishments and partnerships with rescues abroad. As a member of the board and chair of the fundraising committee, I see us struggling day to day to cover the costs of vet care for the dogs we've saved. Yet we never walk away. Somehow we make it work. Please help me make a dent with however much you can and are willing. If you've met Tana & Keenan....you know how empty and boring our lives would be if SCGRR hadn't saved them and brought them into our lives.
So far we have rescued over 2700 dogs since our founding in 2008. The average cost to rescue and rehome has skyrocketed to over $975 per dog. Over 86% of our income goes directly to animal welfare. We have no employees and no facility with high overhead.
If we raise the most funds by August 4, we will win $50,000 for climbing vet bills!
More and more we are seeing dogs abandoned with health issues and/or behavior issues that must be addressed prior to rescue. Here are some examples of the cost of rescuing a golden retriever. YOUR MONEY can make a difference – from basic health & wellness to pain relief or even fixing a bad hip.
- Dysplasia Surgery - $6,000
- TPLO Surgery or Ear Ablation Surgery - $3,000
- FHO Surgery - $1500
- Cardiac Echo-cardiogram - $750
- Entropian Surgery - $500/lid
- 1 mo of Cancer Comfort – oral chemo - $300
- Annual Vaccines & Wellness Exam - $250
- Flea, Tick & Heartworm for 6 Mo.$150
- 1 Month of NSAID or Glucosamine injections for Arthritis and Inoperable Dysplasia: $50
- 1 mo of Tramadol for Pain Management - $20
Golden retrievers are prone to severe ear infections, skin allergies, joint problems that ultimately result in arthritis, entropion eyelids and cancer – both curable and not. Goldens dumped at shelters typically have one or several of these issues and SCGRR will not leave them behind. We monitor craigslist and take dogs relinquished directly from their owners in the hopes we can prevent them from ever knowing what a shelter feels like.
In 2015, we rescued Fergus, helped break the story of 9 other dogs who had been burned by acid as well and launched a manhunt for the person responsible! Fergus is now giving back as a therapy dog in a burn unit. So far this year, we’ve taken in quite a few bonded pairs and found ourselves with maltipoos, doodles and more! We’ve partnered with organizations in Turkey, South Korea, China and Taiwan to bring Golden Retrievers dumped in the forests or slated for the meat markets to safety where there is more demand for this amazing breed than US rescues can support! And we’ve found a rehabilitation partner who is helping those with aggressive issues to remember what it means to be a true Golden!
