BENEFITING: Returning Veterans Project
ORGANIZER: Returning Veterans Project
EVENT: Veterans Charity Challenge 2
Returning Veterans Project (RVP) was founded in 2005 by a therapist named Carol who heard about the challenges faced by Oregon's returning veterans. Within a week, she recruited twenty five counselors who wanted to give back. Since that time, Returning Veterans Project has stretched its capacity every year to help the newest generation of warzone veterans return all the way home to their families, friends and communities.
Created in 2005, we believe it’s the community’s responsibility to help heal both the short and long-term repercussions of war zone service. Inclusion, recognition and honor are at the heart of our community-based services and we challenge you to join our fundraising campaign so we can expand our services locally and challenge other states to follow our lead!
Our Mission: RVP provides free confidential counseling and complementary health care services in Oregon and Southwest Washington for Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans, National Guard, Reserve, Active Duty Service Members, and their families. Our services are free because we recruit, train and support a large network of licensed, community-based practitioners who volunteer by opening a pro bono slot in their practice for those we serve.
We now have 150 volunteer practitioners. They are: psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, marriage & family therapists, alcohol/drug counselors, art and Equine therapists, as well as chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncturists and massage therapists.
The funds that you donate to RVP through Veterans Charity Challenge will support our work this year to recruit, train and support another 60 licensed professionals willing to volunteer their professional time and care to those we serve.
The demand for our services has greatly increased over the last year. In 2013 alone, our volunteer providers delivered 3,843 hours of free, confidential counseling and complementary healthcare services to: 394 OEF/OIF/OND Veterans, Active Duty Service Members and Reservists, and 160 spouses, children, parents and other close family members across Oregon and in Clark County Washington.
Help RVP serve the Second Wave!
We're experiencing our largest annual client number increase due in part, to a 'second wave’ of, OEF/OIF/OND Veterans home five years or longer, in crisis and seeking treatment for the first time. Some are couch surfing, already homeless, or face criminal charges. Many are no longer eligible to enroll at the VA for services, or are waiting to receive VA services.
For the past four years, the Oregon National Guard has had the first to third highest rate of suicide of all Guards in the nation. We are working closely with them, the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs and other Veterans’ organizations to prevent suicide by reducing barriers to care, which includes, the military stigma still strongly attached to needing mental health services.
All RVP services are confidential. Veterans do not have to have to file a claim to receive our services and paperwork is minimal. Our clients are not charged a single dollar and they and their family members can receive services for as long as they are needed.
Many of the Veterans we’ve served have called RVP 'life changing'. Some have let us know that after our services, they have been able to earn a Bachelors or Masters degree!
Thank you for supporting the Returning Veterans Project and those we serve.
