"Clean drinking water is the first and most important step to lifting communities out of cycles of illness and poverty." (freewaters.com)
"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child." -Mary Ellen Chase
Unsafe drinking water and lack of basic sanitation is the cause of 80% of all sickness and disease in the world and books are believed to be the fruit that feeds a child's mind and imagination. Simple things that most of us have never gone a day without, but neither of these are luxuries that schools in third world countries can spare to spend money on. A very disgusting, but true fact.. your toilet at home, at its worst, is cleaner than the water that nearly a billion people have to drink from. Something we take so for granted here, clean drinking water, washing our hands, getting to express our creativity through art and expanding our imaginations through books, are things children in other parts of the world get to enjoy little of.
How do you decide who needs the most help?! You dont, you decide where you're going to start and then you don't stop unitl you reach them all!
Waves Not Plastic decided we could no longer watch this problem, without working towards a solution, so we set out to find where we could make the biggest impact. Finding out that over 40% of the people in Nicaragua live in poverty, making it one of the poorest countries in Latin America, made it clear this needed to be our first stop, on a long mission to do our part.
To raise enough money to be able to volunteer our time in schools and orphanages throughout Nicaragua and share the gift of clean water, with portable water filtration systems, along with children's books, school supplies and crafts. We are absolutely up for the challenge of embarking on such a journey, but we are very clear that we cannot do this entirely on our own.
"To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
"My name is Brittany and I am a 29 year old volunteer with a dream of finding ways to better our planet and the children on it. Some life events forced me to have to grow up way too early and not get to enjoy enough of being a kid and because of that, I spend my time working with children, trying to help them not have to do the same. Through nannying, working in daycares, after school programs and volunteer groups, I have made it my mission to find ways to allow kids more time to just be kids. Growing up in Hawaii, the beaches were my backyard and the ocean, my endless playground. To now see area's of the world with water so contaminated, people cant safely drink, bathe or swim in it, has been incredibly disheartening. Seeing the amount of deprived and malnurished children in these same area's, lacking the basic supplies and tools needed to thrive in life, has been even more heartbreaking. Never having felt fulfilled by any amount of money, I have given up my job and set out, determined to be a part of implimenting some positive change in this world. I am ready for the challenge of going outside of my comfort zone, to benefit some kids who have no choice but to live outside of theirs on a daily basis."
Change begins with one, but takes many...
A donation of just $25, will provide school supplies, crafts and children's books to a classroom and go towards us volunteering our time in their school
A donation of $100, will provide 2 schools with Sawyer portable water filtration systems (1 filter can provide 100 people with clean water for up to 5 years).
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." -Winston Churchill
Every little bit counts and every dollar gets us one step closer to our goal. The more money we raise, the more kids we can reach, supplies we can bring and clean water we can supply. We will spend time trying to give each child some relief from the unfair hand they've been dealt. Please help us be a part of the reason they smile!!!
