As most of you know, our family lives with a genetic disease called Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH). FH is a disease in which your body cannot get rid of cholesterol, and you live with a lifetime of exposure to high cholesterol. Different from other high cholesterol, this lifetime exposure means we are all susceptible to early heart disease. While medications are available and new medications are being developed, it is hard to overcome the lifetime of exposure. On April 22 of this year, we lost our dad/papa/husband/friend, Tom Mann, ultimately as a result of his FH. Our dad had his first heart attack at 28 and had at least two other heart attacks before receiving a heart transplant at age 49.
Through everything, Dad maintained an incredibly positive attitude, and he was a strong and stoic fighter. He loved his family fiercely, and was so encouraged by recent advances in medications for FH. For all of our family, FH is a reality not just for our dad and for us, but for the next generation as well. We are hoping to help support The FH Foundation raise funds to raise awareness, diagnosis, and treatment for FH.
So many of our amazing family and friends generously gave to the FH Foundation in our dad's memory earlier this year, and we are so grateful for your love and support. As we head into Cholesterol Awareness month this September, and FH Awareness Day, we decided to help raise funds again in our dad's memory. We are launching our campaign on August 15, which would have been dad's 70th birthday.
The is a "virtual race," and begins September 1. A virtual race means that while we participate in an activity (like a 5K), we do that activity wherever we are. So, we'll be putting in some steps in Texas, Oklahoma, and Ohio. You can read more about the virtual race here: http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Race-4-FH---Beat-Heart-Disease.html?soid=1111014609861&aid=O4WKauUDHFQ
We love you, Papa, and we miss you every day. Thank you to everyone for your continued love, support, and prayers.
