THE STORY:

BARREN RIVER AREA SAFE SPACE INC wrote -

1 in 4 homeless women identify domestic violence as the leading cause of homelessness. The Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc. provides emergency shelter and support services to women and children faced with the choice between staying in an abusive home or dealing with the trauma of homelessness.

Imagine a child who is forced to leave home because of family violence...imagine leaving in the middle of the night without clothes for school, favorite toys or family pet.  Imagine a mother who must choose whether to stay in an abusive home or leave with her children, unsure of where to go.  Imagine facing that reality if a safe place for families that flee domestic violence did not exist.

Fortunately, emergency shelters and programs designed to support those that flee family violence do exist. For over 30 years, BRASS, Inc. has provided safety, support, crisis intervention, financial literacy & economic justice programs, transitional & permanent housing, court advocacy, immigration services and children's services for survivors of domestic violence.

I worked at BRASS when I was an AmeriCorp worker and I know first hand what this agency does for women and children in our community. Domestic Violence is a scary subject, this story shows bravery on so many levels. 5 years ago
