The EmPower a Village program has provided provide basic micro hydro systems to villages in impoverished areas of Afghanistan. The program has successfully provided systems to three villages so far, with each village having provided the land and labor to install the systems and which communities have maintained these systems on their own.
The Nooristan Foundation, a nonprofit organization which has supported programs to promote education and development in Afghanistan since 1999, is reaching out to individuals and companies to help it reach its goal of raising $3,000 by the end of November so that the Foundation can help two more villages. These systems would provide electricity to the villages during the difficult winter that lies ahead. Additionally, these micro hydro systems would catalyze development and contribute to improved quality of life and opportunities for women and children in these areas.
As electricity becomes available to these villages, small businesses can be supported and families will have electricity for heating their homes and providing light at night to read.
Your donation will make a world of difference in the lives of families who have faced conflict for many years and who are seeking peace and a better life for their children. Any amount of donation can help reach the goal. A video of the 2014-2015 campaign and effort can be found on this page. It shows the community involvement in the program, which has made it a great success so far. (Please note that the video was taken with a basic cell phone given the remoteness of the area and security considerations).
