In honor of our teacher and friend, Maxine Greene, we would like to create a gathering space which brings people together in celebration of Maxine's life and teaching. With $5,000, we will engrave and plant a paving stone along Literary Walk in New York City's Central Park, featuring Maxine's words and wisdom.
Maxine was a lover of learning, an advocate for the arts, and a legendary teacher and philosopher of education. She urges us to question and wonder upon the enduring ideas of freedom, possibility, and the imagination. We aspire for the 'Imagination Stone' to serve as a constant reminder for current and future generations of learners, teachers, artists, and activists, to make concsious choices and take active roles in instilling wide-awakeness and social responsibilty in our shared and collective world.
Your contribution will go directly to realizing Maxine's vision of imagining a world as if it could be otherwise. Thank you!
“My hope is to reawaken concern for and belief in a humane framework for the kinds of education required in a technological society. It is to recall those who read to some lost spontaneity, some forgotten hunger for becoming different, becoming new. My hope is to remind people of what it means to be alive among others, to achieve freedom in dialogue with others for the sake of personal fulfillment and the emergence of a democracy dedicated to life and decency.”
-Maxine Greene, 1988
