HELP US LAUNCH AN INCREDIBLE ART INTERVENTION IN JAMAICA'S INNER CITIES.
TARGET LAUNCH DATE JUNE & JULY 2014!
Jamaica's inner cities are often associated to gang violence, drugs, crime and high unemployment. We want to CHANGE PEOPLES MINDSETS because we believe that there is an UNTAPPED CREATIVE DNA within these inner cities.
Inner cities are PROUD, VIBRANT & CREATIVE communities and share in Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage. Here are just a few individuals who came from an inner city:
Shelly Ann Fraser
To name a few!!!
Our VISION is to transform local living conditions through creative expression, cultural exchange and celebration at once.
Our MISSION is to LAUNCH A COLLABORATIVE ART INTERVENTION in a highly symbolic location for many inner city residents. We want to work with LOCAL CREATIVES, RESIDENTS & FOREIGNERS alike to help paint a giant wall on Harbour street (facing one of Kingston's busiest roads on one side and the sea on the other). This wall belongs to the MultiCare Foundation and the Breezy Castle Center which started out of growing concern for the alienation and marginalisation of Jamaica's youngest citizens. Built on an abandoned lot, the wall faces a multipurpose courts for playing netball, basketball, and volleyball. Today it has acquired a sterling reputation as a neutral playing field, and has been lauded for helping to bring community members together, while setting standards for sporting activities.
Today, this wall is nothing but building bricks (see pictures, red arrow pointing towards wall)...but we want to TRANSFORM it into a MONUMENTAL WORK OF ART.
The power of this project lies in:
- helping improve the identity of this inner city through visual surroundings & aesthetics
- reducing the likelihood of crime, unemployment and “unproductive loitering” by engaging residents into a project thereby helping them to redefine themselves
- creating a new landmark which could drive global attention and enhancing Kingston’s reputation
This is an EXCITING project and we would LOVE if you could HELP US MAKE IT A REALITY!
