THE STORY:

It’s nearly time to lace up my running shoes on April 17th to run Boston for the second time.

Last year was not only the first time for me to actually run the legendary Boston marathon. It was also the first time that I went out to raise money for a race. By chance I saw an interview speaking about Boston’s Theater Offensive (TTO) and that they were using the race to collect money for their work. I was sold straight away. On one hand, it’s the TTO’s work and their True Colors youth program. This program focuses on one of the most vulnerable groups: the LGBTQ youth in Boston’s neighbourhood. This great program does change lives and helps those young people to develop and to be themselves. Last year they even got national recognition for their work: the highest honour in the US for youth development, the National Arts & Humanities Youth Programs Award – handed out by the First Lady, Michelle Obama! And this was the first time this award went to an LGBTQ youth program – how cool can it be!

But there is more to the story that made me to go out of my own comfort zone and to collect money: the art director Abe and the managing director Adrian had both committed to run Boston. And Abe had never done a race before ….

Initially me raising money among my friends and in my network was meant to be a one-time thing. It was scary to do, totally out of my comfort zone. But I had never expected the overwhelming and positive response I got! I’m very grateful for all support last year – and so were Adrian, Abe and the rest of TTO! It was amazing – I hadn’t expected that, many thanks to all that made this happen!

When I knew that I will run Boston again I already pondered about raising some funds again for TTO – knowing that Abe and Adrian will run again. If I needed a last nudge the recent changes in US politics would have been that last nudge. In the current climate, the work TTO does is even more relevant – and support is even more needed.

So here I am again – fundraising for TTO. As last time, I first made sure that I am well prepared. And with 2 weeks to go I really can say that I am ready for it. After having done already 88 training runs (not counting the supporting strength training), totalling to 1,246 km within 99:14 hours and including 4,407m in height difference my body is well prepared. The goal is to stay below 3:10 – how much will depend on the circumstances on the day itself. It won’t be a new PR (that would mean staying below 2:58) – but with good condition it should get closer to the 3h mark.

You can help me inching towards this mark – by supporting TTO and giving me some extra motivation to go even harder. Your gift will help TTO and True Colors to continue their great work and will be very appreciated! If you want to know more about their great work – please have a look at their website: http://www.thetheateroffensive.org/ and here below.

I would be very grateful if you see change to spare a bit. Any cent counts, no amount is too small!

Many, many thanks for considering to help!

Theater Offensive, Inc. wrote -

The Theater Offensive’s mission is to present the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lives in art so bold it breaks through personal isolation, challenges the status quo, and builds thriving communities. For over 25 years, our OUT In Your Neighborhood programming reflects the diversity of the city of Boston, gives voice to underserved LGBT community members, creates avenues for cross-cultural dialogue, and breaks down the barriers of homophobia, bigotry and hate.

True Colors: Out Youth Theater is the longest running program of The Theater Offensive and the oldest LGBT youth theater in the United States. True Colors uses a proven community-engaged theater model to train and motivate LGBTQ and allied youth leaders, the majority of whom are ages 14-22 from Boston neighborhoods. True Colors transforms real-life stories of queer youth in powerful performances and workshops to fight bigotry, hate, and discrimination. The personal stories of the youth are based on their lived experiences, including: bullying, homelessness, coming out, and discrimination. Throughout the program, youth receive high quality theater training, leadership development, and performance opportunities across the greater Boston area.True Colors creates a safe space where LGBT youth and their allies are challenged and supported to engage fully in their personal, social, and artistic development. For youth participants, True Colors is life-changing and often times life-saving.
• 2 in 5 youth are currently or have been homeless
• 67% of youth live in neighborhoods facing violence
• 65% are youth of color
• 65% are from low-income familiesYour gift not only expands True Colors’ capacity, but it highlights your commitment to youth enrichment and development in our most vulnerable communities.
- 90% of youth going through the program envision successful options for their future!

In 2016, True Colors was awarded the National Arts & Humanities Youth Programs Awards, given by the President's Committee on the Arts & the Humanities, and presented at the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama! True Colors is the FIRST LGBTQ PROGRAM to win this award!

Help us celebrate this amazing and historic accomplishment by supporting our team!
