BENEFITING: OLIVIA BOCCUZZI FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
I am running the NYRR TCS NYC Marathon in support of The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation. The foundation was founded in honor of Olivia Marie, a spunky, smart, beautiful, and courageous little girl who was nearly 3-years-old when she lost her 11-month battle with childhood cancer.
Olivia was the daughter of my high school friend, Enza and her husband Frank Boccuzzi. Through the Empire Go Gold in September social media campaign, it came to my attention that each year, cancer kills more kids under the age of 18 than ALL other childhood diseases combined. With those statistics I was surprised to learn that despite the need for progress and resolution, childhood cancer awareness and thus, financial support has not reached the same national level as other cancer awareness campaigns.
It is my goal, when running the marathon, to raise awareness about the need of financial support for pediatric cancer and raise funds for a charity that donates 100% of their donations to research in hopes of finding cures and more effective treatments. Too many families that I personally know have been affected by childhood cancer and it is time to take action!!!
We believe Awareness = Funding = Research = A Cure!

The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization. The mission of the Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation is to provide funds to medical or scientific personnel and/or institutions that are actively researching cures for pediatric brain tumors through medical trials and scientific research. With the help of our medical advisory board, which consists of world-renowned pediatric Neuro-oncologists, we support the most viable research projects and trials in an effort to find a cure for brain tumors. The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation is also committed to providing education and raising public awareness about pediatric cancers and the lack of funding that is currently allocated towards children with cancer from the government and other sources. We believe that increased awareness will lead to more funding and better outcomes. One hundred percent of all monies donated are used towards out mission.
The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation is named after Olivia Marie, the daughter of Enza and Frank and younger sister of James. Olivia was nearly three when she lost her eleven-month battle with a PNET brainstem tumor, a form of childhood cancer. Each year, cancer kills more kids under the age of 18 than ALL other childhood diseases combined. Pediatric cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the US. Brain tumors are one of the deadliest forms of pediatric cancer. Effective treatment does not yet exist due to lack of funding from the government and lack of profit for drug companies to pursue new therapies. This translates into ineffective treatment options for children resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths per year, 7 deaths per day. The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation believes that this is unacceptable. Children deserve better odds and better outcomes. Inspired by Olivia’s strength, courage and love, The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation is dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. 100% of all donations we receive are given to world-renowned hospitals and scientists actively researching cures for pediatric brain tumors. Please join our fight.
