What is iMentor?
iMentor provides youth in underserved communities with one-on-one matches to working professionals who help students develop the leadership, academic, and social skills needed to succeed in high school, college, and their future careers. This year, 2,400 New York City high school students will work 1:1 with their mentors to build a brighter future.
I am in my third year with iMentor, currently working in a two year match with Ana Alonzo. Ana is a NYC high school senior at Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts. We were matched in 2010 and have had a great relationship from the start. Ana is a very hard worker and has shown a lot of enthusiasm towards achieving her goals. We're currently working through the challenges of the NY State Regents and college applications. She has been a joy to work with and I have seen Ana improve greatly during our time together. I look forward to attending her graduation this June and am excited for her to start college in pursuit of a degree in business.
Prior to Ana, I had a one-year match with Ngawang Yutso during her senior year of high school. Ngwang was a bit of a different story than Ana, and it took a lot more initial effort to create a bond. At first, Ngawang had little interest in school, let alone going to college. However, after working with Nwawang, along with her teachers and parents, Ngawang was accepted into college and is doing very well at a local CUNY school. We still keep in touch and she is now looking to transfer to a state school and complete her degree as a pre-med major.
iMentor is a phenomenal program and I've seen first hand the impact that it has on its students. The growth of iMentor is a powerful movement that is having a tremendously positive effect on our community. As such, I have sought to become involved beyond my role as a mentor. I was recently appointed to the Young Executive Board, a position that I think will allow me help iMentor continue to grow in a meaningful way. It is a platform that I truly believe works and it is something that I am proud to be a part of. I would be grateful for your support of a program that has a really profound impact on the lives of mentees - and mentors.
Online Donor Drive?
The Online Donor Drive is iMentor's annual fundraising campaign aimed at raising awareness and funds to support iMentor's work (think bike-a-thon, with less “bike” and more “thon” to support mentoring).
It costs $1,000 a year to support a pair and ensure they have access to quality programming and resources. So, whether you help with $10 or $100, your involvement makes you part of a network of individuals making a lasting investment in the life of a high school student.
