BENEFITING: ROTARY CLUB OF KEY BISCAYNE FOUNDATION INC
We, in the Mosquitero Project, are dedicated to deliver specially-treated bed nets to malaria-infested regions in South America to help save lives. These nets have proven to reduce new incidence of malaria by over 80%! This is because you only get malaria from parasite-infected mosquitos which bite at night. There is no vaccine for malaria; bednets are the best protection. For just $10, you can pay for a net which could shelter a family of up to 4 people who would sleep safely under it! Indigenous people of South America who live in traditional villages still sleep in hammocks daily. Standard bed-nets will not work to protect them against mosquitos because a simple rectangular net (made for people who sleep on the beds, cots or on the ground) cannot accommodate the ropes of the hammock. The Mosquitero Project employs custom made nets that accommodate the hammock’s ropes but can also be used for beds. Insecticide-treated bed nets (mosquiteros) offer a proven effective way to combat malaria. Not only do such nets create a physical barrier between the sleeper and infected mosquitoes, they can actually kill mosquitoes that come in direct contact with the treated netting material. So far, we have delivered almost 10,000 nets in remote regions of Venezuela . We are VERY excited to announce we are expanding our distribution into PERU!
