THE STORY:

My father was that special individual that almost everyone loved and admired. He was loving, funny, over-protective and loved my sister and I to no extent. He walked us to school every morning and picked us up every afternoon, he helped us with our homework, and taught us to be better every single day. Emphasis was put on education because he wanted my sister and I to attend the best schools for a brighter future. Weekdays were spent playing outside or going on adventures to museums and exploring New York City. Not having my father around after the age of 10 made it difficult, not only for me but, our entire family. Sometimes we fail to realize that when death occurs, more than one person is affected. My sister and I lost our father, my mother lost the man of her life, my aunt lost her brother, my cousins lost their uncle, and my grandpa lost his only son.

My father was the most important man in my life because he taught me right from wrong, he taught me how to ride my bike, he taught me humor and confidence, and he taught me to always face my fears. More importantly, he believed in me! That’s something I’ll always remember because its inspired me to become the woman I am today. Often times I think about what it’d be like if my father never passed away…what it’d be like if I never watched him suffer from a heart attack at age 35…or how would life be different if his extremely high cholesterol wasn’t left untreated? Maybe he would still be here today if only he went through bypass surgery like my aunt? But, there’s no use or logic in thinking about the “what ifs.” Life moves on and the only thing that’s left to do is to accept what is.
"I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you" -Joyce Meyer   For most of my life, I’ve been taking cholesterol-lowering medication. I’m 25 yrs. old, I eat super healthy, I exercise regularly, I’m a non-smoker, and I’m not the face most people see when they think of heart disease but, I want that to change. I have familial hypercholesterolemia aka FH. An inherited disorder that makes me susceptible to heart disease and characterized by excess LDL- cholesterol levels.   As an FH Advocate for the FH community and myself, I am fundraising this September in the loving memory of my father. September is Cholesterol Awareness Month and FH Awareness Day is September 24th. My goal is to raise $5000 or more that will be donated to support the FH Foundation and its mission to raise awareness about FH! 1 in 250 people are affected, worldwide. FH runs in families and I’m sure that we each know of at least one person battling high cholesterol or someone that has suffered from a heart attack. I invite you to make a generous and kind donation to my fundraising campaign, share it on your social media page with friends and family, and let’s #Race4FH together!
