Give urgently needed books to children!
Today, 30% of New York City’s children live in poverty. Statistically, these children are more likely to lag behind their more affluent peers and start kindergarten with delays. And when children start kindergarten behind, they struggle to catch up.
Our program works to beat those odds. We keep children’s language development on track and lay a foundation for reading before children start school. We work with New York’s most vulnerable families, including homeless families, children in foster care, and teen parents. And our message is delivered by someone parents listen to and trust – their family doctor.
Your donation will help us:
- Provide urgently needed books for pediatricians to give to children at each checkup.
- Provide training to help pediatricians counsel parents on the best ways to nurture literacy and language development in their children.
“What is so wonderful about Reach Out and Read is that it works through a very practical avenue – using the pediatric office as a way to introduce reading and literature to young children, especially those children who would not ordinarily be exposed to reading on a regular basis or have an opportunity to own books.”-- Dr. Paul B. Yellin, Director of the Yellin Center for Mind, Brain, and Education
We hope you'll join us and help bring books and a love of reading into the homes of New York's children!
