BENEFITING: Imerman Angels
I am running the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Imerman Angels. As many of you know, my family has been impacted by the big C, Cancer. The word that no one wants to hear out of their doctor’s mouth. Many foundations raise funding for cancer research, but Imerman Angels touches on a different aspect of fighting cancer, support. My mom has said countless times, I wish someone would really tell me how this is going to be, especially with the medicine. The doctor can list off all the side effects or explain what it will be like. However, no one gets it like a cancer survivor and this is where Imerman Angels comes in. They offer a support network for cancer patients, caretakers, and family members, matching them with someone of the same gender and age group with the same cancer. A survivor can touch on emotional aspects that a doctor can't, empathizing what the patient is going through and providing tips on how to deal with medicine or family members.
I have provided a link to the Imerman Angels foundation, started by Johnny Imerman, a cancer survivor that turned a negative situation into something truly positive.
The Chicago Marathon is my way of trying to turn something negative into something positive. No person should go through cancer alone. It is incredibly stressful and emotional for the cancer patient and their family. My marathon journey is nothing compared to the battle that a cancer patient fights. Every time I want to stop running or think it’s too hard, I remember this is NOTHING compared to what my mom is enduring. She is my source of inspiration. She has shown me how to handle adversity with grace, compassion, and strength.
As I train for the Chicago Marathon, I hope I can make a difference, supporting the Imerman Angels foundation. I want to thank everyone who has supported me physically, emotionally, and financially through this journey. I hope I will see all your smiling, supportive faces somewhere along those 26.2 miles on October 8th.
Let's Kick Cancer's Butt and make a difference in this world!
