THE STORY:

A number of my friends who run told me a few years ago that I would become a runner.  I would laugh at them, calling all of them crazy.  I mean, really?  You want me to get up at what time and do what, for how long?  Staying in my warm bed, seemed way more appealing.

It wasn’t until two years ago, that I had reached a very low point, health wise.  Like so many, I battled with depression and anxiety along with obesity issues.  Medications kept the depression and anxiety at a minimum, but the weight kept creeping up, as did my blood pressure, adding just another medication to the list.  I decided I had enough and decided I had to do something.  This is when I accepted the challenge to run and purchased my first pair of running shoes.

After about a year of getting used to running, I still couldn’t say I loved it or that I hated it.  I knew it was good for both my mental and physical health.  Because of running, I was able to drop some weight and I was able to come off of all medications.  I pushed myself through many of the mental and physical challenges of running (and life) and within the next year gained some confidence to begin training for a series of races.

In May 2016, shortly after finishing my first series of local races, I experienced every parent’s worst nightmare.  My 15 year old son, Johnathan was killed in a motor vehicle accident.  As you can imagine, my entire world crashed in all around me. Soon, I was back on medications.  I hated the way they made me feel but they got me through my days and back to my massage therapy practice.

I knew that running would help me but the truth is, I felt paralyzed by my grief. Through the support from friends, colleagues, clients and especially my American Massage Therapy Association family, I finally was able to start putting one foot in front of the other.  In those treasured moments of support, I was able to see through the fog and once again was able to lace up my shoes.  This wasn’t easy to do at first.  Just getting back out there with the support of friends pushed me toward the realization that I needed to continue for many reasons.  Mainly for my mental and physical health.  I am happy to report that I am once again off of all medications and exploring my new normal. My new “normal” just so happens to be training for my first full marathon, Anywhere, USA.  Never did I imagine my first marathon would be the Boston Marathon.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity that The John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program has granted to the Massage Therapy Foundation. Those of us who have been selected have been given a platform to promote massage therapy as a profession and talk about the numerous benefits massage has for those who receive it.  Better, yet, this opportunity gives us the chance to give back to our profession by raising money to help support massage therapy research, community service grants and higher standards of education.  This is all made possible by the amazing work of the Massage Therapy Foundation.

With research dollars, we have been able to discover massage can help with many medical conditions.  Massage therapy research has shown that massage therapy can be beneficial for improving sport performance and recovery.  Research also shows that massage can help those suffering from stress, anxiety as well as symptoms of PTSD.  Massage therapy has indeed helped to decrease my level of stress and anxiety as I continue through my healing process.  Massage therapy has also been integral throughout my training, improving both my performance and recovery. With the Massage Therapy Foundation, this kind of research is possible.

As a proud member and volunteer of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), I would like to thank the AMTA in choosing me as their 2017 runner and joining me on this journey as my Corporate Partner.  I am grateful for this opportunity to represent two organizations that are committed to advancing the massage therapy profession through promoting scientific research and evidence-based practice.

I am asking that if are a massage therapist or a client that seeks out massage therapy because you know the benefits or if you simply just want to support me on my journey, to please consider donating to Team MTF.
