On one special day -- Sunday, May 11, 2014 -- the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless (http://columbushomeless.org) will hold its fourteenth annual Mother’s Day Brunch. The Brunch is a celebration to recognize the importance of mothers and motherhood, with a special invitation extended to currently and formerly homeless mothers and their children.
The Mother’s Day Brunch provides mothers with an elegant meal, hand corsages, a gift bag containing beauty products, personal hygiene items, and other “goodies”. During the event volunteer photographers create professional portraits which are framed and given to the mothers. Other activities include live music, a craft table, and health screenings.
For many of the 442 attendees at the 2013 Brunch, the event was an appreciated reminder of their complicated roles as women and mothers who struggle with economic adversity and often homelessness. “I’m celebrating Mother’s Day for the first time with my child”, explained one of the attendees. “This is important to me. With everything I‘ve been through, I want to make memories for the future.” One of our 119 volunteers said “it’s important to acknowledge people who are in difficult times right now. It’s important to be a mother; it’s significant to be a mother. This is something where we can celebrate and recognize them. Even though they may not be in the best circumstances right now. . . they can still feel loved”.
We hope you will consider supporting this event by sponsoring a mother for $25 or sponsoring a table for $250 (or through a donation of any amount that makes sense for you!).
