EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
I am extremely honored to represent the Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF) in the 2014 Boston Marathon. The bib I'll wear was awarded to me by Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals where I'm a school liaison in the education department. For the past decade, I've enjoyed working with educators to move massage education forward. Through my run, I look forward to raising awareness of massage therapy research and MTF programs through my fundraising conversations and connections.
There is a small back story to my experience with the Boston Marathon. I actually supported the Massage Therapy Foundation Team (Running for Research) from the sidelines in 2013. Donned in a bright yellow banana suit (yes, banana suit), I had an amazing day checking in with our runners along the course, from town to town. After seeing all the spectators lining the streets, I was glad I'd chosen to join some other supporters and wear the outfit. It would have been near impossible for our runners to find us along the course without the bananas. All was well with the day and our runners' progress until tragedy struck. To keep a long story short, after a period of time following the bombings, we were able to locate our runners and everyone was safe. The race was stopped just before our 2013 team members were able to cross the line though, so each of them is running in 2014, too.
I consider myself a recreational athlete. I keep active through biking, horseback riding, running, skiing, and snowboarding. I've participated in more 5 & 10ks than I can count with several half marathons thrown in the mix. I've never seriously considered attemping a full marathon until this amazing opportunity presented itself. Maybe my initial inspiration came from the banana suit! I am thrilled, excited, and a wee bit apprehensive, but definitely ready to take on the Boston Marathon challenge!
Again, many thanks to the Massage Therapy Foundation and Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals for the opportunity, and thank you to John Hancock for funding this charity bib program. Let the training begin! Thank you so much for your support.
