BENEFITING: Martin Richard Foundation
ORGANIZER: Martin Richard Foundation
EVENT: Team MR8 Boston 2017
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Created to honor the life and legacy of Martin Richard, an 8 year old boy from Dorchester who lost his life during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, the foundation seeks to invest in community, athletics, and education. Through initiatives in Dorchester and the city of Boston, as well as partnerships with existing community organizations that encourage inclusion, social justice, civic engagement and youth leadership and development, the foundation seeks to inspire youth and adults to promote kindness and to be leaders, peacemakers, and bridge builders among communities. Martin's message was simple, but deeply powerful "No more hurting people. Peace." For Martin, peace meant "togetherness, teamwork, fairness, sportsmanship, inclusion, and simple acts of kindness". The Martin Richard Foundation encourages youth and adults to work towards his message of peace.
Growing up in Dorchester, I enjoyed many of the same things Martin did. Whether that was playing little league baseball in Savin Hill, attending Dorchester day parades, or volunteering throughout the neighborhood. In addition to these shared life experiences, I have also had experience with several of the partnerships the Martin Richard Foundation proudly supports, whether its participating in adaptive sports, working at a homeless shelter, or involvement with educational programs in Dorchester. The Martin Richard Foundation mission resonates with many of my own personal interests and passions, which is why running to share the mission and support team MR8 is so important to me.
As a Boston resident and Boston College alumna, the marathon is one of my favorite days of the year. I remember feeling completely overwhelmed while watching runners summit heartbreak hill at mile 21, where BC is located, and embark on the last five miles of the race for the first time in 2012. While the events of the 2013 marathon were devastating, my hope in supporting the Martin Richard Foundation while training for the 2017 marathon is to ensure Martin's message is not only remembered, but also continually spread and practiced. Support of my marathon fundraising benefitting the Martin Richard Foundation is a major way in which you can continue to honor the legacy of Martin Richard, and spread positivity, hope, and peace.
No donation is too small or too large, and any contribution is generous and appreciated.
With endless gratitude,
