BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Dear Friends and Family,
I am excited to share that I have joined the Mass General Marathon Team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer . . . One Step at a Time for the third year in a row and plan to run the historic 121st Boston Marathon on April 17th to raise money for pediatric cancer research and patient care programs at the Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Cancer Center.
As many of you know, my daughter Niamh lost her dear friend Megan Sheehy who passed away after a yearlong battle with osteosarcoma. Throughout her ordeal, Megan inspired us with her grace, determination, and passion for life. MGHfC was instrumental in guiding Megan and her parents, Tim and Jean, along this unfathomably challenging path and enhancing their opportunities to celebrate life and Love Strong. Through my experience with the team, I have been invigorated and humbled by the stories of current MGHfC families receiving such elite and compassionate medical care. I also have been blessed to meet many of Megan’s caregivers and experience firsthand their warmth for Megan, Tim and Jean.
Megan’s indomitable spirit continues to stir me to help more MGHfC families in her honor, and I need your help to reach and exceed my fundraising goal of $15,000. The funds raised by our team go directly to the MGHfC Cancer Center for clinical and laboratory research in childhood cancer, as well as supportive care programs like art and music therapy; parent, teen, and sibling support groups; and child life specialists who help patients cope with illness and treatment. With your generosity I have raised over $25,000 for MGH in the last two years and I would love to keep going.
I hope I can count on you to support my run this year by contributing to this wonderful program. Any amount, great or small, will be appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your support. To celebrate Megan’s life and spirit and to honor her memory, together we can make a difference in the lives of the kids at MGHfC and one day find a cure for childhood cancer.

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time has raised over $12 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by this Marathon Team, MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile race.
