BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Last year I completed my 25th Boston Marathon wearing a brace on my left knee. It was a long and painful but very special run. Because of your generosity, I raised a record amount of money ($90,000). Since the start of our MassGeneral Marathon Team "Fighting Kid's Cancer... One Step at a Time" in 1998 our team has raised over 12 million dollars. All of the money we raise goes to support the childhood cancer program at MassGeneral. I did announce that 2016 was going to be my last marathon but I am not ready to hang up my running shoes because we have not reached our goal of curing 100% of children with cancer. As many of you know, I had a partial knee replacement this past summer. I feel great but I do need to be careful with training to minimize the impact on my new knee!
Each year I dedicate my marathon run to one of my new patients. Last year I ran for Harry. Harry has Down syndrome and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He is doing incredibly well and always brightens up my day during his clinic visits. This year, I will be running in honor of Nathan. Nathan is a 13 year old teenager who was diagnosed with a lymphoma several months ago. He is fun loving and caring and quite the ice hockey and baseball player. Nathan has had a tough few months but is making great progress and looking forward to getting back to school and playing sports.
Last year I allocated a portion of my fundraising to support the development of a pediatric cancer program in a hospital in Mbarara, Uganda. I am happy to report that a new oncology ward and clinic is being built with the help of these dollars. Some of the money that I raise this year will be going to support doctors and nurses who are in training to care for pediatric oncology patients. I continue to be very optimistic that these efforts will help improve the lives of Ugandan children suffering from cancer.
Thank you for your very loyal support and confidence in our work. Each and every one of our patients and families are very grateful for your help. You can sponsor me online or make a check payable to the MassGeneral Hospital and mail it to me at: Pedi. Hem.-Onc. - MassGeneral Hospital for Children - 55 Fruit St. - Yawkey 8B - Boston, MA 02114. Best wishes and I hope to see you at Mile 20 on April 17, 2017.
Best regards, Howard
