ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Dear Friends and Family
I am more excited than ever to be leading our MGH Marathon Team "Fighting Kid's Cancer ... One Step at a Time". Our 2014 team includes 160 runners who are committed to raising a record amount of money for the childhood cancer program at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children(MGHfC). Fifty of the 160 runners including myself ran with the team last year but were not able to finish the marathon due to the finish line bombings. All of us this year are running to honor those killed and injured in last year's horrific events and to honor our young cancer patients and to support the mission of the MHGfC of curing all children with cancer. Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock Financial, the Mass General Marathon Team has raised nearly $9 million to support these efforts. Funds raised by our runners go directly to support clinical cancer care and research and childlife activities such as art and music therapy.
As you know , each year I dedicate my marathon run to one of my patients. Last year I ran for Carson who had just finished therapy for Hodgkin lymphoma. He is now in 11th grade, very healthy, and continues to be highly ranked nationally in squash. This year I will be running for Lorenzo who is a 19 year old who came to the U.S.from the Dominican Republic two years ago. Just as he was learning English in high school and getting adjusted socially he was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Amazingly he has mastered English, is finishing his senior year in high school, and is feeling great and continuing to receive chemotherapy with the goal of curing his leukemia. Thinking about Lorenzo and all of our young cancer patients is more than enough of an inspiration to get me from Hopkinton to Boston.
Thank you for your loyal support of my marathon runs( #24 this year) and your confidence in our work at MGHfC. Each and every one of our patients and their families are very grateful for your help. We are making great strides toward our goal of curing all children with cancer.
