BENEFITING: LEGAL SERVICES FOR NEW YORK CITY
ORGANIZER: LEGAL SERVICES FOR NEW YORK CITY
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
The most striking thing when you move to New York is the contrast between rich and poor. In the city of Wall Street and the Waldorf, nearly half of all New Yorkers are unable to afford the most basic necessities: food, clothing, shelter, and utilities. Over 2 million adult New Yorkers face acute deprivation, such as staying in a shelter, having utilities shut off or being unable to pay for a doctor.
For New Yorkers who are facing a life crisis, legal help is often the most powerful and effective tool. Unfortunately, a staggering 80 percent of low-income people cannot get legal help due to grossly insufficient funding.
As an attorney who is convinced that private law firms can help, I joined LSNYC's Associate Advisory Board to further the pro-bono relationships between LSNYC and firms like my own. Somehow along the way, I volunteered to run a marathon for them too...
For almost 50 years, LSNYC has improved the lives and communities of low-income New Yorkers. As the country’s largest provider of free civil legal services, they solve both heart-wrenching individual problems—eviction, domestic violence, loss of income—and address their underlying causes through litigation and advocacy. Last year, LSNYC's advocates helped more than 80,000 New Yorkers living in poverty secure the essentials of life: shelter, safety, subsistence income, and access to health care and education.
As a supporter of LSNYC, you will be supporting the fight for vital legal services for thousands of New Yorkers living in poverty. LSNYC does amazing work, but the demand for their services outstrips their resources. By sponsoring me to run the NY Marathon, you will be helping to provide much-needed support to New Yorkers fighting for their rights.
Oh, and if I raise $5,000, then I promise to run in a Batman costume...
