The RNC in Cleveland and Why We Need Your Support!
March 24, 2016
BLACK LIVES MATTER
The people of Cleveland are protesting the epidemic of police violence in their community and across the nation. We invite support for the communities and families of Cleveland impacted by a systemic culture of violence which often result in the racialized policing and the death of Black and Brown people.
CLEVELAND ACTION LEGAL & JAIL SUPPORT
Every American has the right to due process and fair trial. Your support makes this possible. Please donate to this fund to ensure that every person arrested during this crisis, regardless of charges, has access to proper legal representation.
REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION, JULY 18-21
The Republican National Convention will take place July 18-21 at “the Q Arena,” in Cleveland. THE GOP's 2,500 delegates will assemble to formally nominate the party’s presidential candidate and running mate. City Officials are using the private convention to purchase 2,000 sets of riot gear to intimidate and discourage citizens from exercising their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech, to peacefully assemble and to petition the government for justice. In a breach of the City's Consent Decree which calls on City Officials to consult with its constituency and discourages police militarization, it has submitted request for proposals for militarized gear using $20 million of $50 million in federal grant for the private event. They City is seeking to purchase armor; batons; 24 sets of ballistic, bullet resistant armor; steel barriers; CamelBaks hydration kits; and shields. The full list of militarized gear the city will buy has not been released to the public. Thus, we seek funds to offer legal and jail support for citizens that may be wrongfully subjected to abusive police force, profiling (based on race and religion) while exercising their First Amendment rights as citizens. We anticipate thousands of citizens convening in Cleveland this summer and we seek support in sustaining office and street medic space and legal and bail resources for organizers and activists. (The Democrats are to meet July 25-28 in Philadelphia.)
WHY THE RNC
The Black Lives Matter Movement speaks to human dignity, social justice and human rights. It calls for equitable opportunities for all citizens without discrimination due to the color of skin, race, reglion, orientationa nd the like. It examines, exposes and protest the perpetuation of racism through the intersections of classism and state sanctioned cultures of violence. These are issues that impact all of us and should be addressed in a national election for executive office. Furthermore, the vile and open display of hate and violence spewed in the current political arena, most especially by Republican party candidates; endangers the safety, well-being and progress of our nation. Thus, the very issues of race, class and state violence denounced by Black Lives Matter Movement is very relevant to the dangers presented in the 2016 Presidential campaigns.
#ThisIsCLE & A CULTURE OF VIOLENCE
TIMOTHY RUSSELL AND MALISSA WILLIAMS
Cuyahoga County Judge John P. O’Donnell found Officer Michael Brelo not guilty of felony involuntary manslaughter in the killing deaths of Malissa Williams and Timothy Russell during Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23, 2015.
Williams and Russell were killed November 29, 2012 after Cleveland police officers unleashed 137 gunshots into the couple's car following a police pursuit. No one deserves such a fate. Fleeing is not grounds for a death sentence. This case and its verdict is one of too many markers of injustice in the City of Cleveland.
The exoneration of Officer Brelo speaks to a complete disregard for the extreme and unnecessary force meted out against some American citizens who happen to be Black and Brown. It also speaks to the refusal of some to acknowledge the dignity and value of these human lives. This issue was underlined in a December 2014 Department of Justice report on the Cleveland Police Department.
Also in Cleveland, we are calling for charges against the officers involved in the murder of 12-year old Tamir Rice who was killed on a playground after the police perceived his toy gun was real. Not only is Ohio an open-carry state; the police killed Tamir in less than 1 second. Video footage show police approaching Tamir swiftly without warning to put down the toy gun. After Tamir was killed, the officers left his body without medical attention for four minutes.
His older sister was nearby and tried to revive her brother, but was handcuffed by police and placed in the backseat of a police car as her brother was dying. The medical attention offered did not come from the two officers involved in the shooting of the young child. When Tamir's mother arrived, she had to choose between going in the ambulance with her dying son or going to the police station with her daughter, handcuffed and detained for trying to save her brother.
In the case of Tanisha Anderson, the family called police for help. Instead, their beloved died at the hands of police charged to protect and serve. The 37-year-old schizophrenic Cleveland woman was pronounced dead about two hours after she lost consciousness in police custody at her family's home on the city's East Side. Police said Tanisha Anderson went limp while struggling with officers escorting her to a police cruiser. The woman's family said they watched Tanisha Anderson die after a cop used a takedown move to slam her to the pavement.
