Back in late January, I decided that this was the year that I was going to train for my first marathon. It is sort of a bucket list item, but mostly a year of trying new things. Over the past few years I had been running a lot, completed 2 half marathons, a 15K, a few 10Ks, a couple 8Ks, and several 5K runs. I was doing all of these with a smile on my face. In 2012, I sort of hit a wall with running. I wasn’t getting the ‘high’ I usually had and I wasn’t having fun, so I took a break from it. This past February through April I got in my car and traveled across our beautiful country for 9 weeks alone. Along the way I found that hiking, walking for miles, and running were keeping me sane along the journey.
When the marathon registration opened (and then postponed) I told myself that if I got into the lottery then it was a sign that this was going to be my next adventure. Sure enough, I got a spot and started preparing myself mentally for this journey. I am very excited to be sharing this experience with the LPZoo Team for many reasons. 1) I enjoy being a member of a team and working towards a common goal. 2) I have been an Auxiliary Board Member for 7 years now and I am always happy to contribute to the zoo financially and physically…this is just taking it to the next level for me personally. 3) I have always been moved by marathon runners’ strength and perseverance and I am hopeful that I will give someone else that same feeling come October.
I read a quote from a fellow Leo and I think it sums it up for me perfectly: “I am strong, brave and healthy”…words I will be living by during my training.
