KickStart International: Changing the way the world fights poverty.
80% of the poor in sub-Saharan Africa are smallholder farmers.
They all wait for the unreliable rains to grow their crops, harvest at the same time, compete in the same markets, and consequently make very little profit. With an oversupply of food after the rain-fed harvest, between 15% and 50% of crops spoil before they are eaten or sold. However, just a few months later, during the long dry seasons, there is little food or income, and the same farmers fall further into poverty, struggling to even feed their own families.
Irrigation enables farmers to make their own rain.
KickStart International designs durable, low-cost irrigation tools for poor smallholder farmers. The pumps put control into the farmers’ hands, enabling them to decide when, what, and how often to grow. The farmers grow and sell high-value fruits and vegetables year round, especially in the long, dry “hungry” seasons when food is scarce. For the first time, these farmers are able to adequately feed their family year round, afford to send their children to school or to an improved school, provide proper healthcare, and save for their future.
Make it Rain!
The number one need of the poor is a way to make money. Farmers who purchase our pumps increase their income through irrigation from $150 - $850 each year – nearly a 500% increase. Additionally, they increase their total net-annual farm income by over 400% in just 36 months. By giving today, you are giving a farming family the opportunity to transform their lives.

Lifting an additional 1 million people out of poverty by 2021.
Africa’s population today is 1 billion people, but experts say it will grow to 4 billion by 2100. Already, the continent cannot feed itself; 30% of people go to bed hungry at night and half the population lives below the poverty line. KickStart has begun an in-depth strategic planning process. The foundation of the plan will consist of 3 pillars: building partnerships across Africa; making our products locally available through private-sector supply chains; and the continued development and introduction of new high-impact irrigation technologies.
